Google Labs: Google Storage For Developers

by alex on Dec 17th 2010 at 03:12am
This morning i finally received my invite to try out Google's new (although still very early beta stage) cloud storage platform.

After signing up with my invite, I was extremely impressed how simple it was to get started and upload some files through the web interface (compared to Amazon's S3 web interface which is extremely sluggish at the best of times)

The pricing is 17c per gigabyte per month and bandwidth ranges from 15c per gigabyte to 30c per gigabyte depending on geographic location. It seems a little overpriced as Amazon's S3 storage starts at 14c per gigabyte per month and can drop as low as 5.5c per gigabyte.

Although there is a bit of a price difference, I can see in the near future that competition between Google Developer Storage and Amazon S3 will increase and drive prices a lot lower.

Hosting Platform Almost There!

Unfortunately, the grid hosting platform didn't come with the new website launch due to issues with the carriers (AAPT and Internode are being a handful) however the beta trial is running and has been a success over the last few months. We have had 100% uptime for our beta testers which is great news as we can assure clients that sign up after the beta period have true high availability.

Remember those who signed up for the beta registration will be offered their discounts when our infrastructure is setup and ready to start signing clients up plus there will be more promos closer to crunch time!

In the mean time, Stay Tuned!
